LIMITED WORKPLACE MANDATES

United Against Benefit Mandates Coalition

Mandating paid leave benefits: costly for employers, employees

Job Interview

The United Against Workplace Mandates Coalition opposes the creation of a massive one-size-fits-all state administered paid leave mandate financed by a new $1-1.5 billion payroll tax on every worker and business in Michigan.

Under the proposed “Michigan Family Leave Optimal Coverage Benefits Act”, employees would be permitted up to 15 weeks of paid, intermittent leave. The proposal would impact every Michigan employer and employee, moving leave decisions from HR experts to state bureaucrats.

Employers are in the best position to design benefit packages that serve the distinct needs of their businesses and employees. Michigan employers compete for workers every day and consistently receive national recognition for providing some of the best places to work. If the state mandates expansive new benefits without regard for their relevance to the employer and its workforce, costs will go up. The results are reduced staff and job opportunities, hours or both –hurting workers and their families.

LIMITED WORKPLACE MANDATES

  • Make Michigan competitive in the fight for recruiting top talent

  • Understand that Michigan companies know which benefits they can afford and their employees want

  • Avoid big government mandates on job providers already facing labor shortages, supply chain difficulties and inflation and hurt who they claim to help -- the workers

  • Protect gains made since the pandemic wreaked havoc on our economy

  • Stop government programs that are likely to result in fraud
